founded in 2020 by producer rebecca steele, kind stranger is an award-winning production company rooted in a generosity of spirit and a reverence for the stories that shape us.
Kind Stranger’s work includes Anthony Shim’s Riceboy Sleeps, which premiered at TIFF 2022, won the Platform Prize, and garnered numerous accolades on the festival circuit; David Findlay’s short Leaning Into Your Palms, starring French actor Agathe Rouselle (Titane, Palme d’Or 2021); and Joseph Carney’s Life’s Red Light (or ‘DOOMERS’), which premiered at Alice Nella Città 2024.
Rebecca’s path to producing began with a background in theatre and acting, driven by an insatiable curiosity for the human condition and a passion for stories beyond the scope of her own lived experience. After six years working as an actor in New York City, she returned to Vancouver, where she honed her skills behind the camera—as an executive assistant on Netflix’s A Series of Unfortunate Events and Altered Carbon before earning her first feature producing credit on Anthony Shim’s debut Daughter (VIFF 2018).
Riceboy Sleeps’ international success earned Rebecca a nomination for Best Motion Picture at the 2023 Canadian Screen Awards and led to invitations to prestigious film programs, including Berlinale Talents and Rotterdam Lab. Most recently, under the Kind Stranger banner, she serviced post-production on Lloyd Lee Choi’s Lucky Lu, executive produced by Forest Whitaker and starring Chang Chen, which premiered in Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight in 2025.
